THE GAMBIA

Six hours flight away lies the lovely, but small country of The Gambia.

Surrounded by Senegal, the Gambia has been a popular destination since the sixties but has managed to retain it's unspoilt beauty.

The temperature is an average of 30 degrees all year round, which makes this a ideal winter destination. There is more rain though between June and October which makes it very humid.

The slave trade from this area was highlighted in the book by Alex Haley,'Roots', and each year now, during June, a Roots Homecoming Festival is held celebrating the culture of the country through music, dance, arts and crafts.

The hotels are all of a high standard, and most hotels have their own a la carte restaurant. There are a number of other restaurants offering a choice of cuisine, but you will need to take a taxi(agree the price beforehand)from your hotel. Prices are slightly lower than the UK. There is no street lighting or made up pavements so walking is not really feasible. Most hotel organise evening entertainment and have their own bars etc. There is a limited selection of water sports and an 18 hole golf course for those of you who play, and of course you can just laze by the pool.

There are numerous excursions which can be taken. A trip up the river, a tour of the island or 2-3 day trips inland are all possible. The Gambia is renowned for it's birdlife, and special holidays can be arranged for birdwatchers.

For the shoppers amongst you, bargaining is the name of the game, and there are lots of things you can buy.ie Wood carvings, silver jewellery(but be careful )sand painting, and tye dye clothing. An authentic African Experience can be encountered at the markets at Serrekunda and Bakau....not for the faint-hearted. For those less adventurous there are a number of fixed price boutiques.

There are no compulsory vaccinations for the Gambia, but you will need anti-malaria tablets. Consult your doctor for more up to date details.
